BURYING GROUND The Burying Ground is located on the southeast corner of the intersection of County Road B and Sand Hill Road. It is run and maintained by the Town. While the new section of the burying ground is mowed, the old, historic section is left much in its natural state. There are many native species of prairie grasses and flowers in this area, some of which are rare. EXTRA PICK UP DAYS Extra Pick-up Days is the time to place items that do not fit in your trash cart at the curb to dispose of them. These extra pick-ups come at no additional charge for residents, but there are some restrictions. Please see a list of acceptable items below. Please place small items in trash bags, (50lbs or less and not in reusable containers or cardboard boxes) neatly at your curbside. Violators may be ticketed. Whether your normal pickup day is Thursday or Friday, all extra pick-up items must be at the curbside by MONDAY 6:00 am regardless of your normal service day. GARBAGE AND RECYCLING The Town of Dunn is served by Pellitteri Waste Systems for garbage and recycling services. Trash pick-up is on Fridays for those north of Highway B and Thursdays for those south of Highway B and on Sunnyside St. Recycling is every other week on the same day. In a week containing a Holiday, garbage and recycling pick up is delayed by one day. In weeks where service is delayed, normally Thursday service will occur on Friday. Normally Friday service will take place on Saturday. Please plan accordingly. During or after inclement winter weather, please remember to keep your carts accessible by clearing the area of snow and ice to ensure service. Do not place your carts on top of snow piles or in the street. 2026 Calendars 2026 Thursday and Friday Pick-Up Calendars Each household is allowed one 35-gallon container for solid waste and a 65-gallon cart for recyclables. The charge is included on your tax bill each year. For additional volume pick up, contact Pellitteri. For free, you may receive a 35-gallon or a 95-gallon cart for recyclables. Empty Containers & Solid Material: When a container is empty or the material in it is solid, it is no longer hazardous and may be thrown out in the regular trash. The exceptions to this rule are solids or powders containing pesticides, poisons, mercury, lead, or other heavy metals. Empty paint cans cannot be recycled. Put the empty or solid 1 or 5 gallon containers, without the lids, out for curbside pickup. Hazardous Waste (paints and paint-related products, pesticides, poisons, household products containing organic solvents, ignitable, and aerosols): Dane County Clean Sweep accepts hazardous waste. Medications and Prescriptions: Medication should not be flushed down the sewer or placed in the refuse. In Dane County, there are ten MedDrop box locations that are open year-round for disposal of your unwanted medicines. To dispose of medications in the MedDrop drop boxes, please bring your unused or expired medication and a Ziploc or other resealable bag to any MedDrop location. Empty the contents of pill bottles into a zip lock bag and recycle your pill bottles. Leave liquids, gels, or creams in their original containers and place them in a Ziploc bag as well. Plastic bottle caps: Put them back on the container and put in the recycling bin. The two types of plastic will be sorted out once it’s melted down. Sharps: Sharps, such as medical needles, syringes, and lancets pose a problem for collection crews when they are improperly mixed with trash or recyclables. Sharps are a significant health concern for all workers who handle solid waste whether at the curb, the landfill, or the recycling facility. All needle stick injuries require workers to undergo extensive testing, pose serious disease risks, and can cause long-term emotional stress. State regulations require households to safely package sharps for proper disposal and prohibit putting sharps in the landfill. Place your used sharps in a red plastic sharps disposal container or a used plastic laundry bottle labeled with a "Biohazard" or "Sharps" sticker. Stickers are available at participating pharmacies or by calling (608) 267-2626. When your container is full bring it to a participating pharmacy or sharps disposal location. Thermostats: Due to health problems associated with mercury, old thermostats and thermometers should be recycled through Dane County Clean Sweep. Water-Based Products & Cleansers: Latex paints and water-based products are not hazardous. Cleansers or any product that would have gone down the drain in normal use may be flushed down a sanitary sewer drain including septic systems. Flush small amounts of latex paint (less than 1/3 full container) or if not in its original container down a sanitary sewer drain. If the paint is hard on the bottom with some liquid on top (latex paints and driveway sealant), pour the liquid down a sanitary sewer drain. Water-based semi-solid like caulk, joint compound, adhesives, and glues may be thrown in your regular trash. PFAS What are PFAS? PFAS (Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a large group of human-made chemicals. They can affect your health at low levels and can accumulate in your body over time. They’ve been used for over 50 years and are in many everyday products. These chemicals don’t break down easily and are now common in our environment. PFAS are being found in more and more drinking water supplies, including in Dane County. It’s important to limit your exposure as much as possible to protect your health. Communities in Dane County have tested their water through the DNR. Visit the DNR website and click “PFAS Sampling Info” under “Layer Controls.” Click on the circle next to the name of the municipality to fin d out the results. Public Health Offering Private Well Testing for “Forever Chemicals” If you’re in an area near PFAS contamination, it’s recommended that you test your well for PFAS. If you live in Dane County, Public Health can test your well, help you understand results and what to about them. Public Health Madison & Dane County is providing free PFAS water testing for income eligible homeowners with private wells in Dane County. VisitPublic Health's drinking water testing page for details and find out if you’re eligible for free testing. Eligibility for free testing is based on income and the number of people in the household. If you are not eligible for free testing, reduced paid testing is also available at a lower price than many other labs typically offer.
